Your ‘Perfect’ Strategy Plan Is Already Dead

Visual Guide on Product Strategy Planning
Why should I care?
Whether it’s a sudden pandemic, a market swing, or your first-ever product strategy, you need to act—now.
In April 2020, I joined The Product School to stress the same: product leaders must rethink their strategy at lightning speed.
Since then, the 2021 crypto boom, 2022 downturn, and 2023 AI surge proved one thing: change never stops.
While Agile helps teams adjust daily, you also have to shift your broader strategy—no small feat.
Reasons to pivot differ: a new rival’s feature, finally drafting your first formal strategy, or an unexpected external shake-up. Whatever sparks it, you must get everyone—devs, marketing, support—marching toward the same goal.
Here are quick ground rules to whip up a new strategy and keep your whole company moving in sync.
Let’s dive in.
1- Plans Are Useless, but Planning Is Everything
Think of strategy as a rough road‑trip map—you’ll redraw it as you go, but it’s your best guide for now.
Quick planning at Veeva teaches you about your business “terrain” and what you need to win.
Forget perfection. You’ll need multiple iterations, tweaks, and in‑flight adjustments anyway.
The real value? The act of planning, not the final doc.
Skip it, and you lose crucial insights and decisions. Use today’s info, team up, and get everyone headed the same way.
2- Big Picture First, Always
Think “your next hackathon”: no clear goal, no clear path. Start every strategy by nailing down that goal.
Ask & Record: Chat with the CEO till the goal’s crystal.
Align Assumptions: Spell out what you both assume so Marketing and Ops don’t talk past each other.
Own the Gaps: Jot down your guesses. You’ll refine them as you go.
Rank Your Goals: Maybe retention first, growth second, new users third—agree on the order so everyone pulls in the same direction.
With clear priorities and aligned assumptions, your strategy isn’t just slides.
It’s a shared roadmap to win.
